(ANS – Guayaquil) – In the densely populated and socio-economically vulnerable neighbourhood south of Guayaquil known as Isola Trinitaria, eight families now live in safer, healthier and more dignified surroundings thanks to a housing regeneration project that has transformed not only walls and roofs, but also their daily lives. Before the intervention, conditions were similar in many homes: partition walls made of tarpaulins or bamboo, rusty roofs supported by termite-infested wooden planks, earthen floors, makeshift electrical systems and bathrooms without proper connections to drinking water or the sewerage network. During the rainy season, water flooded the homes; in the heat, the deteriorated zinc roofs turned the rooms into ovens. Sleeping, cooking or studying became a daily risk. Today, these conditions have changed. Entire walls have been erected, side fences raised, roofs replaced, internal partition walls built, safe electrical sockets installed, and functional bathrooms, showers, kitchen worktops and solid floors added. Basic necessities, once a distant dream for these families, are now an integral part of their daily lives. The improvements reduce health and safety risks and provide the necessary privacy. The initiative was made possible thanks to funding from the Pöschl Foundation, which is committed to transforming lives starting with the most essential element: the home.
