Founded in 1886 in the United States, Sigma Xi brings together leading researchers from all disciplines worldwide. Throughout its history, more than 200 of its members have received the Nobel Prize, whilst numerous members have also been elected to the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering in that country.
Full membership of this organisation is granted solely through nomination and peer review, a process reserved for researchers with an outstanding track record and significant contributions to scientific development. In the case of the Salesian lecturer, the selection was made by the Committee on Qualifications and Membership, following a rigorous review of his academic output and research contributions.
Among the main merits underpinning this recognition are more than 120 publications indexed in SCOPUS, over 5,000 academic citations, the registration of six patents, and his distinction as an IEEE Senior Member, one of the most prestigious categories within the international engineering and technology community.
Mr Sánchez works in the field of Engineering Sciences, driving projects focused on innovation, technology transfer and knowledge generation. Furthermore, this appointment strengthens the standing of UPS and the GIDTEC research group within a global network of scientific excellence, generating new opportunities for academic cooperation, international visibility and collaborative work.
The official letter of acceptance was issued on 16 April 2026, confirming his admission to an organisation that promotes the advancement of science, responsible research and academic leadership worldwide.
With this significant recognition, UPS reaffirms its commitment to academic excellence and the strengthening of a research community capable of projecting knowledge and innovation from Ecuador onto the international stage.
