Salamanca, Spain – 1970s – This black-and-white photograph shows the high altar of the Church of Our Lady Help of Christians in Salamanca as it was in the 1970s: a vibrant space, rich in colour and liturgical life, yet also bearing the marks of the passing years. The image conveys the solemnity of the celebration, the imposing presence of the Virgin and Child, and the iconographic embrace formed by the murals surrounding the apse. What was then simply ‘the usual appearance of the church’ has now become a document of immense value, as it shows precisely what this heritage looked like in those years. This photograph, taken by the Salesian José Luis Mena, is now preserved in the CCS Historical and Editorial Archives; it not only documents the past, but keeps history alive and invites us to continue caring for what we have received.
