(ANS – Viedma) – On February 28, 2026, the centenary of the death of Giovanni Cagliero was commemorated, a key figure in the history of the Church and of Patagonia. Cagliero was not only the first cardinal of the Salesian Congregation but also the leader of the first missionary expedition sent by John Bosco to Argentina in 1875. His life was marked by the evangelization of Patagonia: he became the first Apostolic Vicar of Northern Patagonia, where he baptized historical figures such as the children of Chief Namuncurá, including Blessed Ceferino. One of the four young men who, in 1854, gave rise to the name “Salesians,” he had accompanied Don Bosco since the early days of the Oratory. In addition to his missionary commitment, he served as Apostolic Delegate in Central America before being created cardinal in 1915. One hundred years after his death in Rome, his remains rest in the Cathedral of Viedma. For the occasion, the Directorate of Community Identity and Historical Heritage and the Salesian Museum “Cardinal Cagliero,” at the request of the Bishop of the Diocese of Viedma, organized an exhibition of the Cardinal’s personal effects inside the Cathedral. Bishop Esteban Laxague, SDB, celebrated Holy Mass in his memory, and the Salesian Museum observed special opening hours to allow the community to visit the places where the Cardinal lived and carried out his mission.
