Ethiopia – Online meeting of leaders in the Salesian Youth Movement in Ethiopia and South Sudan
(ANS) – Leaders of the Salesian Youth Movement (SYM) from Ethiopia and South Sudan gathered online on Sunday 15 March 2026. The meeting focused on deepening understanding of the SYM’s identity, reflected through the image of the Good Shepherd, an essential symbol of Salesian spirituality that illustrates the role of leaders in guiding and accompanying young people. The participants reflected on the SYM’s Global Identity Card, highlighting the movement’s nature as one of communion and evangelisation. Emphasis was placed on the idea that the SYM is not simply a group or a club, but a true “school of holiness”, where young people actively guide and inspire their peers. Leaders are called to lead with care, dedication and a deep sense of responsibility towards those entrusted to them. Leaders are encouraged to get to know each young person personally, fostering meaningful relationships based on trust and attentiveness. The meeting emphasised a leadership style rooted in “loving kindness”. The participants highlighted that leading in the spirit of Don Bosco means walking alongside others as travelling companions. This involves helping young people to discover their vocation and their place in the Church and in society. The meeting was organised by the youth ministry delegates: Fr Petros Medhini, SDB, AET Province, and Sr Paola Labella, FMA, AES Province.
