This shift risks normalising systematic detention and signals a move away from the values of welcome and respect for those with humanitarian needs.

The reform expands detention and introduces “return hubs” that risk indefinite confinement outside EU protection. Crucially, there are no exceptions for children, youth, and families. Legislation must never progress at the expense of those in situations of vulnerability. 

Current rhetoric promotes forced returns above voluntary paths. Proposed intrusive measures, such as searching electronic devices, enable racial profiling and deter people from accessing essential services. This approach ignores family ties and fails to offer real and human solutions for those seeking a future of hope. 

Reduced legal safeguards allow deportations during appeals, creating a grave risk of refoulement violating the core principle of not sending people back to danger and unlawful returns.  

As Christian organisations, we call to uphold compassion, justice, and respect for every person. We urge decision-makers to abandon this “return at all costs” logic and return to policies rooted in human dignity and respect of human rights.
