Brazil – Faith on the move: Recife’s evocative Way of the Cross

(ANS – Recife) – Not even the heavy rain that fell on the city could stop the 27th edition of the “Way of the Cross of Fraternity”, held on 1 April 2026 in Recife. Unlike the 26 previous editions, the route did not wind entirely through the streets as usual. Tradition had to adapt: the community gathered in the “Pátio de São Pedro”, where the Rosary was recited. Immediately afterwards, right there, the reflection on the first station took place. Subsequently, the faithful set off towards the Basilica of Penha, where the Way of the Cross took on a more contemplative tone: the remaining stations were prayed and meditated upon inside, almost symbolising that the external journey had been transformed into an inner one. During the reflections, Fr João Carlos linked each station to the concrete sufferings of our time, bringing to light harsh realities such as femicide, wars and poverty. Prayers were also offered for the sick and for all those associated with the “Assistenza Missionaria Ambulante” (AMA) project. At the heart of the celebration, the cross, weighing around 100 kg, was carried by widows, young people, the elderly, members of the AMA, and many others, a visible sign that the Passion of Christ continues to be remembered when the whole city decides, together, to uphold hope. Finally, Archbishop Paulo Jackson of Olinda and Recife celebrated Mass, reflecting in his homily on the thirty pieces of silver paid for Jesus and emphasising that Christ took on this condition to free us from sin and death.
