(ANS – Vöcklabruck) – A special symbol is taking shape in the garden of the Don Bosco school in Vöcklabruck, Austria. Here, in fact, the students decided to create the Salesian logo using native plants such as dogwood, currants and strawberries. This original idea emerged during last year’s final-year students’ Applied Natural Sciences course. In the spring, the students carried out this project with great enthusiasm and physical effort. Working outdoors, creating together, being active and enjoying the sunshine made the project a true community experience. During the project, particular attention was paid to regionality and sustainability: materials such as lawn edging, compost and plants were sourced from local suppliers. Even the excavated soil was carefully reused. As the school explains, the planting follows a well-thought-out concept: a maple tree forms the top of the logo, flanked by native dogwood bushes. Rosaceae, raspberries and currants define the ‘roof’, whilst various varieties of strawberries serve as ground cover. The three columns are adorned with early-flowering flowers and native perennials. “Now the garden can grow, and we can’t wait for the first shoots to appear,” they conclude.
