The programme commenced with a prayer led by Fr. Godugunooru Chinnappa, Province Coordinator of Hyderabad. The participants were welcomed by Rev. Fr. Sebastian Kuricheal, Provincial of Guwahati and Provincial In-charge of AIDBES, who emphasised that the initiative is not merely academic but a mission-driven effort. He highlighted that Don Bosco education focuses on the holistic formation of young people, nurturing responsible citizens committed to the care of society and the environment.

The meeting was coordinated by Fr. John Parankimalil, Secretary of AIDBES, while technical support was provided by BOSCOM, South Asia.

The keynote address was delivered by Fr. Savio Silveira, Coordinator of Integral Ecology in the Youth Ministry Sector (Rome). He presented the UNESCO Green Schools Quality Standard as a practical and globally recognised framework to transform schools into centres of sustainability.

Fr. Savio explained that a “Green School” adopts a whole-institution approach, integrating environmental awareness and sustainable practices into governance, infrastructure, curriculum, and community engagement. He emphasised that this approach aligns closely with the vision of Don Bosco education, which promotes the integral development of the young—intellectual, social, moral, and spiritual.

The framework is built around four key dimensions: School Governance, Facilities and Operations, Teaching and Learning, and Community Engagement. Each dimension includes essential actions such as establishing a Green Committee, creating monitoring systems, integrating environmental education into lesson plans, and organising awareness programmes for the community.

Highlighting the way forward, Fr. Savio outlined a clear roadmap: developing a shared vision, assessing existing practices, implementing a Green School Action Plan, monitoring progress, and celebrating achievements. He also encouraged schools to move from intention to action and work collaboratively across provinces.

The session concluded with an interactive discussion, reflecting the enthusiasm and commitment of participants to adopt and implement the GSQS framework in their institutions.

This initiative marks a major milestone in the Don Bosco educational network in India, aligning with global efforts to address climate change and ecological challenges. By adopting the UNESCO Green Schools Quality Standard, Don Bosco institutions aim to become models of sustainability and centres for forming environmentally responsible citizens.
