Fr Alfred Maravilla was born on 31 July 1962 in Silay City, Negros Occidental (Philippines). He made his first religious profession on 1 April 1982 in Canlubang (Philippines) and his perpetual profession on 24 March 1988 in Gabutu, Papua New Guinea.<\/p>\n
After volunteering for the missions, he was sent to Papua New Guinea, where he completed his practical training in Port Moresby and Gabutu (1985–1988). He completed his theological studies in Cremisan, in the Holy Land, and was ordained a priest in 1992 in Silay City.<\/p>\n
He subsequently continued his studies at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, specialising in Missiology (1992–1994) and Dogmatic Theology (2007). In 2013 he obtained a Doctorate in Fundamental Theology.<\/p>\n
His pastoral and leadership experience in Papua New Guinea includes service at the Don Bosco Technical School in Gabutu, Port Moresby (1995–1997), at Savio House (1997), and his appointment as Principal and Rector in Gabutu (1997–2002). From 2002 to 2006 he served as Director of the Liturgical Catechetical Institute in Goroka for the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands.<\/p>\n
In 2008, while engaged in doctoral studies in Rome, he was called by the Rector Major to serve in the Missions Sector at Salesian Headquarters, where he was particularly responsible for the formation and accompaniment of new missionaries. On 23 January 2017 he was appointed second Superior of the Papua New Guinea–Solomon Islands Vice Province for the six-year term 2017–2023, guiding the growth of this young and dynamic Salesian reality. During the 28th General Chapter (2020) he was subsequently elected General Councillor for the Missions for the six-year term 2020–2026, offering his contribution to missionary animation throughout the Congregation worldwide.<\/p>\n
Upon completing his mandate on the General Council, he was entrusted with leading the first group of Salesian missionaries sent to Vanuatu, assuming the role of Director of the new presence and thus marking the official beginning of the Salesian presence in the 137th country of the Congregation.<\/p>\n
The PGS Vice Province, canonically erected on 23 December 2015, is a young and multicultural reality composed of confreres from various nationalities. Most of its works are directed towards the education and evangelisation of young people, particularly those most in need. The Vice Province is further enriched by the presence of several groups of the Salesian Family.<\/p>\n
Fr Maravilla brings to his new office significant missionary experience, solid theological competence and a profound knowledge of the reality of the Vice Province. He speaks Ilonggo, Filipino (Tagalog), English, Italian, Spanish, French and Tok Pisin.<\/p>\n
He will be installed as the new Superior of the PGS Vice province on 31 January 2027. His appointment, for the second time, as Superior confirms a path of continuity and renewed dynamism for the Salesian presence in Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands, rooted in Don Bosco’s missionary tradition and directed towards the service of young people, especially the poorest.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
