The opening conference of the Visit was held that same evening at the Salesian community in Taipei, in the meeting room of St John Bosco Church. During the meeting, the Councillor conveyed the greetings and gratitude of the Rector Major, Fr Fabio Attard, to the confreres and presented his message of guidance to the Salesian Congregation.<\/p>\n
On 25 April, the parish of St John Bosco then hosted a significant day of reflection dedicated to Catholic university students from Myanmar studying in Taiwan. The programme, organised by those responsible for youth ministry, with the collaboration of a Dominican Sister and a Franciscan Sister on mission in Taiwan, brought together around 125 students for a day of prayer, sharing and celebration. Fr William Matthews led this important occasion.<\/p>\n
The event began with the Sacrament of Reconciliation, which lasted almost three hours and was greatly appreciated by the young people present, as for the first time in a long while they were able to meet a priest capable of hearing their confessions in the Burmese language.<\/p>\n
The highlight of the morning was the Eucharistic Celebration, also in Burmese, during which the Councillor encouraged the students to remain steadfast in the faith and to live with hope. Drawing on the Gospel of John, he reminded them of Jesus, the Good Shepherd, who came so that “they may have life, and have it to the full<\/em>” (Jn 10:10). His message resonated deeply with the participants, many of whom live far from home whilst facing academic, cultural and personal challenges.<\/p>\n After Mass, the students shared a joyful lunch, followed by games and fun activities that strengthened bonds of friendship and community. In the afternoon session, Fr Matthews gave a talk on life’s challenges, focusing in particular on cultivating positive thinking amidst difficulties. This was followed by a lively question-and-answer session, during which the students openly shared their concerns and reflections on life, education and faith whilst living in Taiwan.<\/p>\n The day concluded in true Salesian spirit, with further fun activities, singing and dancing that filled the parish with joy and youthful energy.<\/p>\n At the end of the programme, the young Catholics from Myanmar expressed their sincere gratitude to the Salesian community in Taipei for opening their doors and hosting the event. Many participants described the day as uplifting, rejuvenating and deeply inspiring, expressing joy at the spiritual nourishment and sense of belonging it had offered.<\/p>\n The Councillor’s visit continued on Sunday with a meeting with the parish community of St John Bosco: Fr Matthews celebrated and greeted the faithful during two morning Masses in Chinese and presided over another Mass in English. At the end of the Eucharist, he joined the Parish Pastoral Council for a time of fellowship. In the late afternoon, he gave a talk to the Salesian Cooperators, reflecting on the Salesian Oratory criterion and the 2026 Strenna – “Do whatever he tells you. Believers, free to serve<\/em>”.
