From the outset, he highlighted the courage and determination of the Salesians in Haiti, who continue Don Bosco’s educational and pastoral mission with audacity, hope, and love despite the difficult national context. He stressed that the Salesian presence in Haiti is a ‘prophetic sign’ for the whole Congregation. According to the Rector Major, the current situation in the country should not be perceived as an irreparable problem, but as a challenge that stimulates and motivates. Evoking the figure of Don Bosco, Fr Fabio Attard recalled that the Salesian is a patient sower of hope, a vigilant sentinel who never gives up in the face of the cry of young people, and an enlightened guide capable of inventing, by divine grace, new ways with creativity.

Going beyond his paternal concern, the Rector Major listened with particular attention to the presentation of the different communities by their Rectors. He was visibly moved by the testimony of his confreres working in areas under the control of armed groups.

In conclusion, Fr Fabio Attard assured everyone that every Haitian Salesian is present in his prayers and in those of the General Council. In order not to succumb to discouragement, he insisted on the fundamental importance of cultivating union with God and fraternal life in community. He took his leave of the participants by imparting his blessing.

The Rector Major’s participation was a true moment of grace and consolation for the Salesians of Haiti. It encourages them to redouble their apostolic zeal to offer the poorest young people ‘the water of life’ brought by Emmanuel, through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The rest of the day was devoted to analysing the Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct. The confreres carried out high-quality work in a serious and fraternal atmosphere, an essential step forward for the life of the Salesian Vice-Province of Haiti.
