Spain – Fr Carlos Garulo, SDB, has gone to the Father’s House
(ANS – Barcelona) – The Salesian Province of Mary Help of Christians, Spain (SMX) announces that the beloved Salesian priest Fr Carlos Garulo Ena passed away in Barcelona during the night of 28–29 July 2026. He was 83 years old, having spent 66 years as a Salesian and 57 years in the priesthood.
Carlos Garulo Ena was born in Loarre (Huesca) on 1 September 1942. His parents were Antonio and Guadalupe. After completing his novitiate at L’Arboç, where he had professed his vows on 16 August 1959, he studied philosophy at Sant Vicenç dels Horts (1959–62), undertook his practical training at Terrassa (1962–65) and studied theology at Martí-Codolar Barcelona (1965–69). He professed perpetual vows at Martí-Codolar Barcelona on 7 August 1965 and was ordained a priest on 1 March 1969 at Horta Barcelona by Archbishop Torrella.
Father Carlos Garulo was assigned to the following houses: Meridiana Barcelona (1969–70), Madrid-San Fernando (1970–72), Santo Ángel Barcelona (1972–76), Can Prats Barcelona (1976–78 and 1980–90), Barcelona-Sant Jordi (1978–80), Rome–Generalate (1991–2010), Tibidabo Barcelona(2010–16) and Rocafort Barcelona (2016–20). Since 2020, he had been a resident at the M.D. della Mercè infirmary in Martí-Codolar Barcelona.
Father Garulo also studied music and piano at the Conservatoire of the Opera House (Gran Teatre del Liceu) in Barcelona (1965–1969).
Among his various roles, he was: author of several books on education and pastoral care, and collections of poetry; from 2001 to 2010, he was a collaborator in the Department for Youth Ministry within the Salesian University Institutions.
1972–1980: Lecturer at the Bianquerna University College, Barcelona 1972–1989: Editorial Director of the ‘Edebé’ publishing house (Barcelona) 1990–1997: Central Delegate for Social Communication (RMG) 8 December 1997: Delegate of the Rector Major for Salesian University Institutions (IUS) 1997–2001: Founder and Director of the ‘VidimusDominum.org’ website, a meeting point for consecrated life on the internet, run by the USG (Union of Superiors General).
On 17 November 2010, the Catholic University of Brasília (UCB) awarded him an honorary doctorate in recognition of his role as the principal architect of the design and development of the Salesian Institutions of Higher Education (IUS) project from 1998 to 2010.
And in 2012, the Town Council of Villa de Loarre (Spain) named a street after him, with the inscription “Calle Don Carlos Garulo Ena, Salesian Priest and Educator”.
The wake will be held in the Chapel of the Salesian Community of Martí-Codolar on Wednesday 29 July 2026, from 4 pm to 8 pm (UTC+2). The funeral Mass is scheduled for Thursday 30 July at the Parish of Mary Help of Christians in Sarrià Barcelona at 11 am.
