India – “Once a Bosconian, Always a Bosconian”: Rector Major Inspires School and College Youth in Siliguri

The day began at Don Bosco School, Siliguri, where students welcomed the Rector Major with a vibrant dance and song. Addressing around 1,500 school students, Fr. Attard reminded them that “Once a Bosconian, always a Bosconian,” urging them to remain rooted in the values nurtured within the Salesian family. In a clear and compelling three‑point message, he invited them to grow in knowledge, making the most of the educational opportunities and supportive environment they enjoy; to grow in love, becoming people of the heart in whom knowledge matures into wisdom and compassion; and to dare to reach out, recalling how Don Bosco himself was supported by young people and how intelligent, wise, and loving youth can build a kinder and stronger India.

Following an informal interaction with the school students, the Rector Major proceeded to Salesian College, Siliguri, where he was welcomed in Kilian Hall by the Rector, faculty, students, alumni, and members of the Salesian Family. Speaking to nearly 2,000 college students, Fr. Attard reflected on identity, responsibility, and freedom in a rapidly changing world. Drawing from Don Bosco’s life, he emphasized that poverty is not a death sentence, reminding students that Don Bosco refused to let his circumstances define him and believed deeply in the transformative power of young people.

Addressing the challenges of individualism, artificial intelligence, and narrow thinking, the Rector Major invited students to make a conscious choice between indifference and care. He encouraged them to think critically, engage intelligently, and choose freely, integrating human values, spirituality, and love. “Have the courage to look in the mirror and ask yourself who you are choosing to become,” he urged, reminding them that life is a gift that must not be shaped by others.

A highlight of the college programme was the release of Centennial Reflections, a commemorative publication marking the centenary of the Salesian mission. The gathering concluded with a vote of thanks by the Principal, followed by a cordial interaction over coffee. As the Rector Major journeyed among the youth and educators, one message resonated clearly: the true wealth of India lies in its people, culture, and values—and today’s young people are called to safeguard and strengthen that legacy.
