Greece – First-Ever Feast of Don Bosco Celebrated at Syros
The celebrations commenced on the evening of 30 January with a fraternal gathering of the local clergy and the Salesian community. The clergy of Syros, together with the Salesians, assembled for the prayer of Vespers, followed by a shared dinner. The event was graced by the presence of three bishops and eight priests, fostering a spirit of communion, joy, and ecclesial fraternity.
The evening provided a meaningful opportunity for prayer, dialogue, and mutual sharing in honour of Don Bosco. A particularly touching moment was offered by Emeritus Bishop Monsignor Nicholas, who rendered a song in Greek in tribute to St John Bosco and the first Salesian missionaries who arrived in Syros. The gathering concluded with thanksgiving and praise to God for the gift of the Salesian charism and its growing roots in Greece.
On 31 January, the Feast of Don Bosco was solemnly celebrated at the Parish Church of the Annunciation in Ermoupolis, Syros. The Eucharistic celebration, which began at 5:00 p.m., brought together approximately 100 to 120 children, young people, and faithful, united in a joyful celebration of faith and gratitude.
The Holy Mass was presided over by the Administrator Bishop, Monsignor Sebastianus, who expressed heartfelt thanksgiving to God for the presence of the Salesians in Syros. He described their mission as a gift to the local Church, particularly for young people, and referred to it as a “sprout of hope” for the Diocese of Syros and for the youth of Greece as a whole.
The homily was delivered by Fr Oscar Tuscano, Superior of the Salesian community, who expressed his gratitude to the Bishop for the warm welcome and support extended to the Salesian mission in the diocese. Highlighting the significance of this new presence in Greece, he reaffirmed—together with Fr Marcin and Fr Rodil—their commitment to be signs and bearers of God’s love for young people. He underlined their resolve to walk closely with the youth as good shepherds, dedicating themselves to the care of souls and to fostering hope among the younger generations. The Eucharistic celebration concluded with a special prayer to St John Bosco, invoking his intercession for the growth, perseverance, and fruitfulness of the Salesian mission in Greece.
The celebrations continued with a moment of fellowship in the parish hall, where participants shared refreshments and exchanged greetings. A highlight of the gathering was the tombola, which generated great enthusiasm, especially among children, as numerous gifts were distributed. The joy and active participation of all present reflected the gratitude of the local community, who warmly thanked the Salesians for their presence and service on the island of Syros.
Currently, the first Salesian community in Greece is composed of three members: Fr Oscar Tuscano(India), Fr. Rodil Lladones (Philippines), and Fr Marcin Wosiek (Poland). This initial phase marks a significant period of integration and discernment for the community, as they deepen their knowledge of the Greek language, culture, and people, while prayerfully reflecting on how best to consolidate and develop the Salesian mission in Greece in the years ahead.
