Diamond Jubilee of Don Bosco Beatitudes

The Rector Major’s first stop was Don Bosco Beatitudes, a Social Welfare Centre celebrating the Diamond Jubilee of its foundation. For sixty years, the centre has been committed to holistic care, accompanying people at every stage of life and responding to diverse social needs with dedication and compassion.

Addressing the gathering, Fr Attard urged members of the Salesian Family and collaborators to persevere in their mission for the young. “Never stop believing in the future of our young people,” he said. “They deserve it, and it is our duty to accompany and support them, even when it is difficult. We must be like Don Bosco—believing in them, educating them, and preparing them for their future.”

His words resonated deeply with the founding vision of the pioneers of the centre, Fr Orpheus Mantovani and Fr Francis Schlooz, who were inspired by the conviction that “no one has the right to be happy alone”.

Encounter at Don Bosco Anbu Illam

The Rector Major then visited Don Bosco Anbu Illam, a Salesian home dedicated to the care and rehabilitation of street children. Drawing from his own earlier missionary experience in similar settings, he recalled how children would often speak of their desire for a better future. “If you truly desire it, you will have a good future,” he would tell them, reaffirming their dignity and potential.

In a symbolic and touching gesture, a young boy dressed as Don Bosco expressed gratitude on behalf of the children, highlighting the continuing fatherly presence of the Salesian charism among the most vulnerable.

Golden Jubilee of the Sisters of Maria Auxiliatrix

Fr Attard also visited the Generalate of the Sisters of Maria Auxiliatrix (SMA), founded in Tamil Nadu and part of the Salesian Family, who are celebrating their Golden Jubilee this year. On this occasion, he unveiled a statue of Fr M. C. Antony, SDB, founder of the congregation, paying tribute to his vision and enduring contribution to the service of the Church and of young people.

Visit to Pope John’s Garden

The day concluded with a visit to Pope John’s Garden, a Salesian centre dedicated to the care of Youth at Risk, particularly the leprosy patients and those living with HIV. Addressing the young residents, the Rector Major offered words of encouragement and confidence: “You have a future, and the Salesians are here to help ensure that it is a good one. Be grateful for your life. What you are experiencing now will strengthen you for the future.”

In a joyful cultural exchange, the children surprised him by singing in Maltese. Fr Attard warmly joined them, creating a moment of shared joy and closeness.

The day’s programme concluded with the Rector Major imparting his blessing upon all present, leaving behind a renewed sense of hope and strengthening the commitment to serve young people most in need.
