India – A Renewed Call to Missionary Commitment in Polur

The Polur mission, historically associated with the pioneering efforts of Bishop Eugene Mederlet SDB and early Salesian missionaries such as Fr Natale Cignatta, Fr Venantius Villanova, and Fr Francis Schlooz, continues to play a significant role in strengthening the local Church and promoting integral development in the region.

Upon arrival, the Rector Major received a traditional welcome that reflected the cultural richness of the area, accompanied by a formal guard of honour organized by the parish community. Representatives from Sacred Heart Church, St Antony’s Church in Veeralur, Don Bosco SIHARAM in Tiruvannamalai, and the mission at Jawadhi Hills participated in the Eucharistic celebration, expressing the unity of the Salesian presence in the region.

In his homily, Fr Attard invited the faithful to move beyond a minimal understanding of Christian life. Following Christ, he noted, is not simply about avoiding wrongdoing but about actively choosing and promoting the good. Drawing inspiration from the legacy of the early missionaries, he reminded the congregation of their call to be “salt of the earth” and “light of the world” through consistent acts of faith, service, and integrity. Echoing Don Bosco’s vision, he encouraged all to strive to be “good Christians and honest citizens,” particularly for the sake of the younger generation.

Earlier in the day, the Rector Major was greeted by Most Rev. Neethinathan, D.D., Bishop of Chengalpattu, who conveyed his good wishes for the visit. Following the Eucharistic celebration, Fr Attard shared lunch with the FMA Sisters at their convent, strengthening bonds within the Salesian Family.

The morning concluded as a meaningful expression of ecclesial communion and missionary renewal, reaffirming the call to live the Gospel with simplicity, generosity, and commitment.
