India – Tirupattur: Rector Major Animates the Cradle of Salesian India
Tirupattur: The Cradle of Salesian India
Entrusted to the Salesians during the early 20th-century reorganization of territories linked to the Archdiocese of Madras, Tirupattur soon became a stable hub for formation and youth ministry in South India. Over the decades, the Don Bosco Aspirantate, the parish of Mary Help of Christians with its mission stations, and the nearby Sacred Heart College have shaped the city into a living expression of Don Bosco’s charism, and giving life and future to thousands of poor young people.
Generations of aspirants have begun their vocational journey here, growing in close contact with schools, oratories, and the rural and urban youth they are called to serve. Alongside the FMA and the wider Salesian Family, these works have earned Tirupattur recognition as a genuine “Salesian city,” where both Church and civil society readily associate the region with youth-centered evangelization inspired by Don Bosco.
Encounter with Salesians in Initial Formation
The Rector Major began his day at the Don Bosco Aspirantate with a heartfelt meeting with Salesians in initial formation. The encounter unfolded in an atmosphere of simplicity, attentiveness, and genuine dialogue rather than formal discourse. Patiently responding to questions, he offered fatherly insights rooted in experience and spiritual depth.
Drawing inspiration from Don Bosco’s dream at nine years of age, he invited the formees to internalize its missionary dynamism rather than merely recall it as a narrative. Formation, he emphasized, is an interior journey of discernment sustained by a living relationship with Jesus. He highlighted two indispensable pillars for vocational stability: regular accompaniment by a trusted spiritual director and daily meditation on the Word of God.
Above all, he urged them to remain close to young people—especially the poorest—so that the future of the Congregation may remain firmly rooted in Christ and faithful to Don Bosco’s original vision.
Remembrance and Eucharistic Communion
Before proceeding to the nearby Don Rua community campus for the Holy Eucharist, the Rector Major paused at the Salesian cemetery on the Don Bosco campus. In silent prayer, he entrusted to the Lord the confreres who had laboured in the vineyard of Tirupattur and its surrounding missions. This moment of remembrance linked the present vitality of the Province with the sacrifice and dedication of earlier generations who laid the foundations of this enduring mission.
During the Eucharistic celebration, attended by Salesians, formees, regional youth, lay collaborators, and members of the Salesian Family, he reflected on the Gospel call to childlike humility. True greatness, he underlined, lies in simplicity, unconditional welcome, and the commitment to empower the young through integral education. These values, embodied by Don Bosco, continue to define the authenticity of the Salesian mission.
A Renewed Call from the Cradle of Salesian India
The day in Tirupattur wove together formation, gratitude, and Eucharistic fellowship into a unified and compelling message: to embrace the Salesian vocation with humility, conviction, and missionary zeal.
In a city whose uninterrupted history of vocations, education, and pastoral outreach has shaped the identity of Salesian India, the presence of the Rector Major reaffirmed Tirupattur’s enduring role as a living laboratory of Salesian identity and mission for the INM Province and for the wider Salesian Family in South Asia.
