DR Congo – Visit to Goma by the General Councillor for Youth Ministry and the Regional Councillor for Central and West Africa
First Stop at the “Mamma Margherita” Community
Upon arrival, the two Councillors visited the “Mamma Margherita” community, headquarters of the AFC-EST Delegation. This initial encounter carried strong symbolic value, highlighting the institutional and spiritual communion that unites the Salesian houses in a shared educational and pastoral mission.
ITIG Celebrates: An Enthusiastic Welcome from the Young
The most vibrant welcome took place at the Technical-Industrial Institute of Goma (ITIG), where a large gathering of young people expressed their joy and gratitude. Songs, applause, and spontaneous gestures of affection created a deeply Salesian atmosphere — that of a home where young people feel welcomed and loved.
In his address, Fr Bejarano shared his emotion at meeting the youth of Goma. He noted the particular significance of this journey, as it is his first visit to the African continent — a choice that reflects the Congregation’s attention to this Delegation and recognition of its dynamic mission among young people.
A Strategic Assembly for the Future
Beyond the festive celebrations, the visit was marked by an important moment of governance: the Salesian assembly presided over by Fr Owoudou. The meeting took place within the significant context of the Delegation’s transition toward becoming a Vice-Province. This process reflects the numerical, pastoral, and institutional growth of the Salesian presence in Central-Eastern Africa. The assembly provided an opportunity to evaluate progress, clarify priorities, and strengthen unity around the educational and evangelizing mission.
A Week of Pastoral Closeness
Fr Bejarano and Fr Owoudou will continue visiting the various communities of the Delegation throughout the week. This pastoral journey offers opportunities for listening, encouragement, and shared discernment regarding future directions. More than a formal visit, it is a moment of communion and charismatic affirmation. Through their presence, the Congregation expresses its concrete closeness to the young people of Goma and to those who work daily for their human, spiritual, and professional formation.
