In 2024, the Province engaged Mantra Strategies to conduct a comprehensive organisational review. The consultation involved Salesians, members of the Salesian Family, young people, lay mission partners, volunteers, and leadership teams across its centres. While affirming the strength and vitality of the mission, the review also identified emerging challenges in governance, sustainability, and operational leadership. A principal recommendation was the creation of a CEO role to support organisational development and responsible stewardship of resources.

Following a process of discernment, the Provincial Council concluded that establishing the CEO position would strengthen the Province’s operational capacity while enabling Salesians to dedicate more time to pastoral ministry. As Fr. Eunan McDonnell SDB, Provincial of the Salesians of Don Bosco Ireland, stated, the appointment represents “a sign of growth and renewal,” affirming the partnership between consecrated and lay vocations in serving young people.

The CEO role does not replace that of the Provincial Economer but works in close collaboration with both the Provincial and the Provincial Council. The position is responsible for supporting strategic planning, ensuring alignment between operational activities and the Salesian mission, and promoting effective governance, sustainability, and financial stewardship. It also seeks to foster strong relationships among stakeholders across the Province.

In accepting the appointment, Moss Garde emphasised the collaborative nature of the role and its service-oriented purpose within the broader Salesian mission. This development signals a renewed commitment to synodal leadership, professional governance, and co-responsibility in mission. By integrating professional expertise with the charism of Don Bosco, the Province strengthens its capacity to respond effectively and sustainably to the needs of young people.

The appointment represents an important step in the ongoing development of governance structures that support mission vitality, collaboration, and long-term sustainability within the Salesians of Don Bosco Ireland.
