Peru – Salesian communicators at the service of evangelisation: third meeting of Salesian communicators
The opening address was given by Fr Juan Pablo Alcas, Provincial of the Province of Peru (PER), who encouraged the participants to recognise themselves as the primary evangelisers of their communities, called to live out their mission with responsibility and a pastoral sense. In his message, the Provincial emphasised that today “we live in a digital culture that requires not only technical skills, but also the ability to humanise, accompany and give meaning.” He also pointed out that technology is neither good nor bad in itself, but depends on how it is used.
In this regard, Fr Alcas then emphasised that communicating in a Salesian way means conveying the truth with authenticity, doing so from the heart and always acting in accordance with ethical criteria.
Fr Jesús Jurado Alarcón, Provincial Delegate for Social Communication, took the floor and reflected on ethics in the age of Artificial Intelligence. Starting with the question: “Can machines make moral decisions?”, he invited reflection on the role of ethics in the use of AI and on the risks of communicating without clear criteria.
The General Councillor for Social Communication, Fr Fidel María Orendain, also addressed the gathering virtually, bringing greetings from Rome and thanking the participants for their commitment. In his message, he emphasised that communication and the role of young people are fundamental to building a meaningful digital culture. He also noted that Artificial Intelligence poses ethical challenges that require responsibility, truth and discernment.
Before concluding, the General Councillor reminded the audience that young people are not mere spectators, but protagonists called to transform the digital environment with authentic values.
As part of the activities, the participants then split into groups and visited various tourist attractions in the city, putting what they had learnt into practice. Interviews, photo shoots, videos and other similar initiatives were the tools used to draft their articles. But, without a doubt, the most important aspect was getting to know other realities and realising just how fundamental their role is in the realm of communication.
During the cultural evening, organised by the various committees, it was possible to witness the wealth of talent this city possesses. Parents, teachers and students took part with enthusiasm.
In this festive atmosphere, the Dean of the Order of Journalists of Peru – Ayacucho branch – Armando Salvatierra, greeted the participants and encouraged them to view communication as a path in the service of peace.
The highlight of the event was the presentation of diplomas to the communicators from the various institutions by Archbishop Salvador Piñeiro, Archbishop of Ayacucho. In his address, he congratulated the delegations and encouraged them to take on their mission with commitment.
“In this wonderful art of conveying truth and love, today more than ever we need communicators who build up rather than divide,” he said.
