Philippines – 2026 Regional Planning Assembly of Salesian Communication Delegates from East Asia-Oceania

On the second day, participants devoted themselves to reflection, dialogue and strategic planning for the future of communication in the Region. The day opened with a morning session led by Fr Fidel Orendain on regional realities, initiatives and planning directions for social communication in East Asia-Oceania, with a particular focus on collaboration, identity and practical regional coordination.

Later, delegates took part in discussions on young people, mental health and digital culture from a medical and pastoral perspective, reflecting on the growing impact of digital environments on today’s youth. In the afternoon, the conference focused on ‘The Way Forward for EAO’, concentrating on concrete priorities, structures and action plans for the region.

Participants embarked on a third intensive day dedicated to strategic planning, continuing their mission to draw up a unified three-year roadmap for the region. Hosted yesterday, the sessions combined high-level pastoral leadership with deep cultural and community integration.

The morning began with Holy Mass and Lauds, laying the spiritual foundations for a demanding agenda. Fr Fidel Maria Orendain led the first main session of the day, centred on Crisis Communication. Fr Orendain guided the delegates through the fundamental communication protocols necessary to address contemporary challenges, whilst maintaining institutional transparency and Salesian identity.

After a brief mid-morning break, the delegates moved straight on to a regional planning session. This collaborative session enabled provincial delegates and lay collaborators from across the EAO to align their local contexts and co-create synchronised regional structures.

In the afternoon, the assembly welcomed guest speaker Fr John Mi Shen, a distinguished ecclesial communicator and pastoral leader.

Fr Mi Shen delivered an engaging presentation entitled “Communication and the Church from the FABC Perspective”. Drawing on the fundamental principles of the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences (FABC), he urged the delegates to look beyond mere media production and technological management. Instead, he invited them to view communication fundamentally as an act of communion, listening and intercultural dialogue, adapted to Asian societies, which are characterised by profound diversity and rapid digitalisation.
