The documentary explores nearly two decades of Fr Prevost’s life in Rome, from his arrival in Italy from the United States in 1981 through his years as Prior General of the Order of Saint Augustine, a role he held for two consecutive terms, to his appointment as Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops and his creation as Cardinal in 2023.

Years marked by study, pastoral service, friendships, pilgrimages, travels, meetings, and dedicated work are brought to life through exclusive images and previously unpublished footage, together with testimonies from fellow Augustinians, former classmates, longtime friends, and collaborators from both the Order of Saint Augustine and the Dicastery for Bishops.

Leo in Rome completes the trilogy of documentaries produced by the Vatican media to help audiences become more familiar with the life and personality of Pope Leo XIV. The series began with León de Perú, released in June 2025 and dedicated to his missionary years in Peru, and continued with Leo from Chicago, published in November 2025 and focusing on his American roots.

The documentary is produced by Vatican journalists Felipe Herrera-Espaliat, Salvatore Cernuzio, and Tiziana Campisi, with editing by Jaime Vizcaíno Haro.
