Italy – The Salesian Cooperators’ performance: Cooperators. Women and men in love with a saint
(ANS – Sacrofano) – To mark the Salesian Cooperators’ Meeting, to be held in Sacrofano from 31 July to 2 August 2026, a performance entitled Cooperators. Women and men in love with a saint will be staged. The script is written and directed by Alessandro Spalvieri, a Catholic author and director, a Salesian Cooperator, and the only director in Italy to have written extensively on the Salesian Family. The show, in which the entire cast consists of Salesian Cooperators and Friends of Don Bosco, was conceived following a series of research projects carried out in historical archives and on the earliest documents recording the founding of what were then known as the Salesian Cooperators. The musical consultancy and the original lyrics of the songs are also provided by a Salesian Cooperator, Ruggiero Diella. The play’s dialogue is all based – albeit adapted for the stage – on the words and events that characterised Don Bosco’s life and his relationship with his first lay collaborators. One of the key aspects that the director is keen to emphasise is the voluntary nature of the choice to become a Salesian Cooperator, which arises as a response to the desire to carry on Don Bosco’s work of bringing young people closer to God, asking for nothing in return but deriving joy solely from personal enrichment and spiritual growth. The final part of the performance is devoted to a review of the Salesian Cooperators’ mission statement and rules, from the Second Vatican Council up to 2013. The premiere of the performance is scheduled for the evening of 31 July in Sacrofano.
