(ANS – Shillong) – On 7 July 2026, the Sacred Heart Theological College (SHTC) in Mawlai launched a new Khasi language course, designed to provide seminarians, religious and missionaries with the linguistic tools necessary to carry out more effective pastoral ministry amongst the local population. The opening ceremony took place on the college campus and included a moment of prayer, an invocation to the Holy Spirit and the lighting of the ceremonial lamp. The event was attended by lecturers, members of the academic community, religious enrolled on the course and numerous guests. The guest of honour was Dr Sylvanus Lamare, who, in his address, emphasised that language is not only a means of communication but also a privileged way of understanding a people’s culture, history and values. During the ceremony, it was highlighted that learning the Khasi language fosters authentic evangelisation, founded on listening, dialogue and closeness to local communities. The programme was enriched by traditional Khasi songs and a presentation of the course structure, which aims to train future priests and religious who are culturally sensitive and capable of proclaiming the Gospel with respect, understanding and an authentic missionary spirit.
