Located at the gateway to northern Chin State near the Indian border, Kalay has faced severe instability since the 2021 military takeover. Ongoing conflict on the outskirts of the town has resulted in burned homes, blocked roads and widespread displacement. With the local economy in decline, many families live below the poverty line, and young people face limited opportunities, early marriages and exploitation.
“Don Bosco Youth Center is the only boarding school for youth in the area,” a Salesian explained. “Many come seeking education and spiritual growth. The expansion of these classrooms allows us to serve many more who otherwise would have little opportunity for schooling.”
Local resident Ko Khai No expressed gratitude for the center’s impact. “Don Bosco, with its preventive system, brings positive changes for youth and their families. I am impressed and thankful for what the Salesians are doing in our community,” he said.
Despite the country’s ongoing challenges, Salesian missionaries continue to prioritize support for the most vulnerable. In addition to strengthening educational services, they are contributing to a long-term global aid plan aimed at helping communities rebuild their lives following the recent earthquake.
Any goods, services or funds provided by Salesian Missions to programs in Myanmar were administered in compliance with applicable laws and regulations, including sanctions overseen by the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Asset Control.
