India – Fr. Dr. Josekutty Thomas receives CBCI National Award for Biblical Scholarship and Digital Evangelization

The award ceremony took place at St. John’s Medical College, Bengaluru, during a national CBCI event celebrating individuals who have made significant contributions to the Church, society, and the nation.

Making the Word of God Accessible

Fr. Josekutty has played a central role in publishing and disseminating Sacred Scripture through the BibleOn platform, greatly expanding access to the Word of God across linguistic and cultural contexts. Under his leadership, the Bible has been made available in 45 languages, including 18 languages of Northeast India. He has also led the preparation of audio versions of the Bible in several regional and tribal languages, enabling wider outreach among diverse communities.

The BibleOn application was inaugurated in October 2022 by Cardinal Ángel Fernández Artime, then Rector Major of the Salesians, during his visit to Shillong. An upgraded hybrid version, featuring enhanced digital tools and user‑friendly interfaces, was released in 2024, further strengthening its evangelizing potential.

Scholarship, Culture, and Education

A respected scholar and researcher, Fr. Josekutty has authored books and published academic articles on the history of the Catholic Church in Northeast India and the cultural heritage of tribal communities, particularly in Arunachal Pradesh. His research on the challenges of translating the Bible into tribal languages has contributed meaningfully to the fields of biblical translation and contextual theology.

His pastoral initiatives extend to the preparation of hymnals and prayer books in local languages, the recording of hymns in indigenous tongues, and the production of videos and documentaries in English and various tribal languages of Arunachal Pradesh.

Holding a PhD in Education with specialization in the Preventive System of Don Bosco, Fr. Josekutty has also made significant contributions to education. He has been instrumental in establishing five ICSE schools in remote regions of Northeast India, promoting holistic development rooted in Gospel values and the Salesian charism. Previously, he was honoured with the Creative Bible Ministry Award by the CBCI.

Recognizing Exemplary Service

The CBCI National Awards 2026 honoured 19 individuals for exemplary service to Church and society. Among the awardees was Conrad K. Sangma, Chief Minister of Meghalaya, recognized for his inclusive leadership and commitment to human dignity and development. In his address, he highlighted the Church’s role in responding to social concerns, fostering youth leadership, and contributing to nation‑building through education and service.

Cardinal George Koovakad, present at the ceremony, commended the Indian Church for recognizing individuals who have excelled in diverse fields and rendered dedicated service to society.

The recognition of Fr. Dr. Josekutty Thomas stands as a testament to the Salesian commitment to proclaiming the Gospel through scholarship, culture, education, and innovative digital means, ensuring that the Word of God continues to reach new generations and communities.
