India – General Councillor for Social Communication Visits ING Province

Earlier in the day, Fr Orendain was welcomed at Jorabat and at the Tapesia campus of Assam Don Bosco University by Fr Jose Palely, Vice Chancellor, and Fr Zachary Varickasseril, Registrar. Addressing students of the Department of Mass Communication, he reflected on the relationship between technology and the human person, describing technology as an extension of human capacity while cautioning against overdependence that weakens natural abilities. He urged students to cultivate the three qualities most valued by employers—knowledge, skills and attitude—while remaining grounded in strong character and human values.

At the Don Bosco Institute and later at the Provincial House, the General Councillor met Salesians and participants of a Salesian Pedagogy Workshop. Drawing from his experience at BOSCOM, he praised the distinctive dynamism of social communication in India. He highlighted the rapid acceleration of digital technology, especially artificial intelligence, noting that while technical skills may quickly become outdated, soft skills and integrity remain essential for the future.

Fr Orendain strongly reminded the confreres never to lose their Salesian identity, calling it their greatest gift to the Church. He proposed critical questions about the future of the oratory in the digital age, emphasizing that while the digital world is a new “continent” for mission, it cannot replace real-life accompaniment and authentic relationships. Reaffirming the enduring relevance of Don Bosco’s holistic pedagogy of church, home, school and playground, he concluded by expressing joy at witnessing a vibrant and living Salesian spirit throughout his visit.
