The meeting opened with greetings from Fr Stefano Martoglio, Vicar of the Rector Major, and continued with a presentation of the Salesian presence in Ghana, which began in 1992. Today, the Salesians operate in Ashaiman, Sunyani, and Tatale, focusing especially on education, youth ministry, and technical and vocational training.
Although more recent, the presence of VIS in Ghana is equally significant, with projects implemented in the regions of Accra, Bono, Bono East, Western, Northern, and Volta. The activities of the Salesians and their NGO are centered on education and vocational training for vulnerable youth, support for children in street situations, the promotion of gender equality and women’s empowerment, and the development of safe and regular migration pathways.
Ambassador Quartey expressed deep appreciation for the work carried out by the Salesians and VIS in Ghana and encouraged the strengthening of collaboration within the framework of the already solid relations between the two countries.
The meeting concluded with remarks by the Salesian Economer General, Fr Gabriel Stawowy, and was marked by a spirit of strong mutual understanding and openness. Participants emphasized the desire to foster new synergies in education and vocational training and to contribute to innovative forms of cooperation between Italy and Ghana, particularly in light of Ghana’s growing strategic role at both the international level and within Italy’s “Mattei Plan.”
Founded in 1986, VIS is the Salesian NGO dedicated to international development cooperation. Inspired by Don Bosco’s charism, it operates in numerous countries worldwide to promote integral human development, social justice, and concrete opportunities for young people, especially the most vulnerable. In close partnership with the Salesians, VIS continues to build bridges between institutions and communities, placing youth at the heart of sustainable and inclusive development.
