Japan – DBVG Holds 35th Anniversary Celebration

In his homily, Bishop Yamanouchi reflected on the fruits of DBVG’s overseas volunteer activities, saying: “Through DBVG’s volunteer programs abroad, many young people have learned what it means to ‘live together’ through encounters and relationships with others. Today, they are actively serving in the Church and in society. Thirty-five years later, the dream of our founder, the late Bishop Francis Osamu Mizobe SDB has truly borne fruit. The Church in Japan is now striving not to distinguish between Japanese and foreign people, but rather to live together while embracing diversity. I hope that DBVG will continue to form people who put this spirit of ‘living together’ into practice in a variety of contexts and roles.”

During the Mass, a young member of DBVG received the Sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation, providing a joyful occasion to look back with gratitude on the blessings of the past 35 years. The celebration concluded with the singing of Weaving Dreams, the commemorative song for the 100th anniversary of the Salesians’ arrival in Japan.

Afterward, participants moved to Cimatti Hall for the commemorative gathering. Following a toast by Fr Francis Atsushi Hamasaki SDB, Provincial and Director of DBVG, a young member presented a slideshow reviewing the history of DBVG’s activities, allowing everyone to reflect on the richness of its journey.

Participants also listened to a talk by Mr Shinya Sawamura, a DBVG alumnus. Drawing on his own experiences with DBVG, he shared – with warmth and humor – about his current work at the House of Joy children’s home in the Philippines, where he helps bring smiles and hope to children in need.

The group then watched a special 35th-anniversary commemorative video and renewed their commitment to moving forward into the future together.

Members from a wide range of generations attended, from those who supported DBVG in its early years to those who have joined its most recent activities. They enjoyed renewing old friendships and sharing their gratitude for the organization’s 35-year journey.

The atmosphere remained joyful as Salesians who had led DBVG’s activities as seminarians and priests shared updates about their current ministries and expressed their gratitude to DBVG. The celebration concluded with a blessing from Fr John Bosco Ryohei Taniguchi SDB, DBVG Activity Coordinator (Executive Secretary) for the current year. Participants entrusted the upcoming volunteer mission to Mongolia to God’s care and prayed for its abundant fruits.

DBVG continues its journey forward, inspired by its motto: “Until Smiles Fill the Earth.”
