Italy – A new study of “Don Bosco’s Letters”

Fifteen scholars of political and ecclesiastical history, pedagogy, spirituality, communication and creative languages offer innovative interpretations, highlighting the historical, cultural, religious and social content and implications of this valuable collection of letters. What emerges is a decidedly fresh portrait of Don Bosco, viewed from a close-up and dynamic perspective, immersed in a political, ecclesial and social context rich in figures and issues, as well as in a cultural landscape characterised by the ideas and distinctive features of nineteenth-century Italy and beyond.

One of the scholars writes: “ His [Don Bosco’s] letters are so compelling to his correspondents because he does not resort to rhetoric, does not indulge in compliments or praise, does not beg; Don Bosco recounts what he sees, asks for what he lacks in order to help others, does not even need to exaggerate the scale of the misfortunes he encounters, does not use them opportunistically, does not take pleasure in them; he is clear and forthright. Those who read his letters have nowhere to hide, no illusions or dreams to take refuge in; they are neither cajoled nor pampered. They can only choose whether to help – thereby helping to save their own souls in the process – or to look the other way. It is no surprise that so many listened to him.” First and foremost among them are the Salesians of yesterday, today and tomorrow, wherever they may be working for the salvation of the souls of the “poor and abandoned young people”, as Don Bosco constantly expressed in his almost daily correspondence.

Of particular interest to members of the Salesian Family are the editor’s concise concluding reflections: an explicit invitation to read Don Bosco’s letters chronologically or thematically, and also a sort of spiritual testament from someone who has spent decades poring over the letters of his holy founder.
