India – “Sundays in Valdocco” launched to recreate Don Bosco’s Oratory Experience for Youth

The Youth Ministry, Social Communications, and Vocation Promotion departments of the Salesian Province of Bombay collaborate on this programme. They strive to recreate the welcoming and formative atmosphere of Don Bosco’s original oratory for today’s youth.

Br Royston Colaco led the Adoration Service, setting a reflective tone. Fr Leon Cruz presented the origins and significance of the Valdocco Oratory, highlighting Don Bosco’s enduring mission among young people.

Attention shifted to contemporary concerns at the “Valdocco Talks.” Young speakers Shonan Padte and Leander Pereira shared views on “Indifference in Our World Today.” Fr Joyston then challenged participants to move beyond self-centred attitudes and attend to others’ needs. Animated group discussions followed, with participants exchanging ideas and sharing reflections with the larger assembly.

The highlight of the programme was the Eucharistic celebration in the Crypt at the Shrine of Don Bosco’s Madonna. Fr Mylin Noronha presided, reflecting on four key characteristics of Don Bosco’s Oratory: a welcoming home, a playground for friendship, a school for life, and a church that evangelises. He urged the youth to embody these values daily and create similar spaces of welcome and growth everywhere.

After lunch, the atmosphere shifted to recreation and community building. The DBYS youth organised games that filled the campus with enthusiasm and laughter, while Fr Joyston led an engaging round of Dumb Charades.

The day ended with a vibrant musical performance by Keith and his band from Don Bosco, Kurla. Their energetic set drew enthusiastic participation from the crowd. The performance provided a fitting finale to the inaugural gathering.

The launch of “Sundays in Valdocco” spiritually enriched participants, deepening their sense of community and understanding of the Salesian charism. Organisers report increased engagement and feedback, indicating the programme’s impact. Continuing throughout the year, it will reach seven locations across the province, offering more young people the chance to experience Don Bosco’s enduring legacy.
