The first phase focused on attentive listening, research and discussion of the current situation of young people in Vanuatu, paying particular attention to the social, educational and employment challenges they face. Data from reports by government ministries and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) were taken seriously into account. This preliminary study provided valuable insights into the opportunities and needs facing young people today. This phase also included visits to key institutions and government offices.
The second phase centred on communal discernment, during which the Salesians reflected together on possible directions for their mission. Guided by the Salesian charism of educating and evangelising young people, especially those most in need, the community explored concrete ways of responding to local realities.
The third phase led to various decisions and proposals regarding the way forward. The community reaffirmed its commitment to providing quality education and training that prepares young people for decent employment and responsible citizenship. Among the priority areas considered were tertiary technical education (at university level) and vocational training programmes, recognising the growing demand for practical skills and professional training in Vanuatu.
The final phase will consist of a critical evaluation of the proposal together with a group of local experts in the relevant sectors, a meeting with the education authorities, and its presentation to the Provincial and his Council for final approval.
As the planning process continues, the Salesians remain committed to working closely with various stakeholders, government bodies and local communities to develop educational initiatives that meet the real needs of young people, whilst promoting their integral human, spiritual and professional development.
