Poland – Towards the beatification of Fr Jan Świerc and his companions, Polish Salesian martyrs: Fr Ignacy Dobiasz

Thanks to the support of his parish priest and his parents, the talented boy was later able to travel to Italy, where he studied in Salesian schools, preparing himself for priestly service in the Salesian Congregation. He had dreamed of joining the Congregation from an early age, inspired especially by the example of other sons of Silesia already working in the Salesian mission field, among them the future Cardinal August Hlond.

Salesian Path

After completing secondary school in Valsalice, on 16 August 1898 he entered the Salesian novitiate in Ivrea. There he received the cassock from Bishop John Cagliero, a Salesian. In the same place, on 6 October 1900, he made his first religious profession, and on 21 September 1903, in San Benigno Canavese, he made his perpetual vows, dedicating his entire life to God. Between 1904 and 1908 he studied philosophy in San Benigno Canavese and theology in Foglizzo, while completing a three-year period of practical pedagogical training. On 28 June 1908 he was ordained a priest by Archbishop Filipello.

He further supplemented his philosophical and theological education with studies at the Academy of Agriculture in Turin, which he completed by obtaining a diploma in agronomy. After his ordination, he returned to Poland in the same year to dedicate himself to working with the youth he loved so dearly. He worked in various Salesian institutions: in Oświęcim as a catechist in public schools, in Daszawa, in Przemyśl, and in Kraków—first in Płaszów, later in the seminary as a vicar and catechist.

He also served in Warsaw as a vicar, and finally returned to Kraków, where he remained until his arrest.

Fr. Ignacy was one of those Salesians whose life was not marked by prestigious offices, but by quiet and humble service. His main apostolic work consisted of teaching and hearing confessions. He taught various subjects, including Latin, which he had already taught in Italy as a cleric.

The second main aspect of his ministry was the confessional. Though not known as a great preacher, he chose the confessional as the privileged place of his apostolate. His patience, kindness, understanding, and deep knowledge of the human soul made him one of the most esteemed confessors, serving both young people and his fellow Salesians.

He was especially appreciated by the latter, many of whom, even older priests, came to him to open their hearts before his fatherly presence.

For theology students and young priests, he was known as a solid expert in moral theology; yet it was above all in the confessional that he formed souls according to the likeness of Christ.

He spent long hours there, often depriving himself of regular meals and rest. He was a living example of sacrifice and self-denial.

These virtues shone especially in the Dębniki parish in Kraków, where he was remembered as a tireless servant of God, crowned by Divine Providence with the crown of martyrdom.

Arrest

He was arrested together with other Salesians on that memorable day, 23 May 1941, on the eve of the feast of Mary Help of Christians, for which he had been preparing himself and the faithful with great zeal.

After a short stay in the Kraków prison, he was sent with the other Salesians to the death camp of Auschwitz, from which he would never return.

His arrest and deportation were entirely unjustified.

Martyrdom and Death

He did not remain long in the extermination camp. Already on the day following his arrival from Kraków, he was brutally murdered while carrying out exhausting forced labour.

This act of martyrdom took place on 27 June 1941—a day marked in the history of Polish Salesians with the crimson of blood.

An eyewitness describes his death as follows:

“The second victim of that tragic day, 27 June 1941, was Fr. Ignacy Dobiasz. He was an elderly priest, about sixty years old, frail and exhausted. He was unable to keep up with the work imposed on him. He often stopped to rest… This drew the attention of the guards.

‘Ah, so you also do not want to work!’ shouted the kapo. ‘Of course, it is easier to deceive and rob than to work! I will help you! Come on, load the stones! Run to the pit!’

With his last strength, he obeyed the order, but he was no longer able to push the wheelbarrow back. Seeing this, the brutal Franz began beating the venerable old man with a stick.

With great effort, he dragged himself to the edge of the deep pit, but he could not tip the wheelbarrow… Franz pushed him into the pit…

After long efforts, constantly beaten, he managed to crawl out… Then the kapo beat his victim until he breathed his last. Words of prayer rose from our lips to God for the repose of his soul.”

Fr. Ignacy Dobiasz died on 27 June 1941 at the age of 61, after 41 years of religious profession and 33 years of priesthood. He bore the camp number 17364.
