Benin – Zogbo Parish Celebrates 40 Years of Faith, Communion and Mission

The solemn Eucharistic celebration opened with the official hymn of the 40th anniversary, performed by the Union of the parish’s French choirs, setting a festive and prayerful tone for the historic occasion. Around the altar were gathered prominent Church leaders, including the Archbishop of Cotonou, Msgr. Roger Houngbédji; the Episcopal Vicar, Fr. Epiphane Nayetón; the Provincial of the Salesians of Don Bosco of the AON Province, Fr. Jésus Benoît Badji; and the Parish Priest, Fr. Raphaël Coulibaly. Their presence underscored the importance of this milestone not only for the parish community but also for the local Church.

In his homily, Archbishop Houngbédji invited the faithful to make the jubilee a moment of spiritual renewal and recommitment. Drawing inspiration from the liturgical readings of the day, he proposed three key orientations for the future. First, he encouraged Christians to deepen their faith, following the example of the prophet Jeremiah, who remained steadfast despite trials. Second, he urged parishioners to strengthen fraternal communion through active participation in parish activities and Basic Ecclesial Communities (CEBs). Finally, he called on all to bear courageous witness to their faith in society, recalling the Gospel promise: “Everyone who acknowledges me before others, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven.”

Following Communion, the celebration turned to a moving remembrance of the parish’s history. Through songs and narratives in local languages—Sèxwégnon, Ogo Oluwa, Adjogan and Hanyé—the choirs retraced significant milestones in the life of the community. The melodies and testimonies allowed the faithful to relive key moments that have shaped the identity and vitality of the parish over the past forty years.

A special tribute was paid to the former parish priests who contributed to the spiritual and material growth of Saint Anthony of Padua Parish. Particular recognition was also given to the priests currently serving in Zogbo for their generous pastoral commitment.

The celebration was further enriched by the presence of priests, religious men and women originating from Zogbo, a visible sign of the parish’s vocational fruitfulness. Their participation highlighted the role the community has played in nurturing vocations and sustaining the Salesian charism in the region.

The jubilee Mass was followed by the traditional “Zindo,” a festive and cultural moment animated in a warm and fraternal atmosphere. The celebration continued with a shared meal among the various parish groups, movements and associations, strengthening bonds of communion and solidarity.

Forty years after its foundation, Saint Anthony of Padua Parish of Zogbo stands as one of the most dynamic communities of the Archdiocese of Cotonou. Rooted in faith, sustained by service, and inspired by the Salesian spirit, the parish continues to write its history—an ongoing story of evangelization, fraternity and hope, carried forward by generations committed to making the Gospel shine in their daily lives.
